Robert Barton Biography
Robert Childers Barton (14 March 1881 – 10 August 1975) was an Anglo-Irish politician, Irish nationalist, and farmer. Born into a wealthy Irish Protestant land-owning family in County Wicklow, he was educated at Rugby and Oxford. Barton served as an officer in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers during World War I, stationed in Dublin during the 1916 Easter Rising. He resigned his commission in protest of the British government's response to the uprising and joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Barton played a significant role in the negotiations leading up to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. He was married to Rachel Warren and was a double first cousin and close friend of Erskine Childers.
