Robert Benfield Biography
Robert Benfield (died July 1649) was a seventeenth-century actor, best known for his membership in the King's Men, a prominent theatrical company during the post-Shakespeare era. Little is known about Benfield's early life, but he likely started his career with Lady Elizabeth's Men in 1613. He joined the King's Men shortly after, possibly replacing William Ostler. Benfield acted in notable productions such as John Webster's 'The Duchess of Malfi' around 1621. He became a shareholder in the company by 1619 and later became a sharer in both the Globe and Blackfriars theatres. In 1635, Benfield, along with Thomas Pollard and Eliard Swanston, petitioned the Lord Chamberlain, Philip Herbert, for a conflict related to their membership in the King's Men.
