Snowden is a 2016 biographical thriller film directed by Oliver Stone and based on the books The Snowden Files and Time of the Octopus. The film follows Edward Snowden, a CIA subcontractor and whistleblower, who leaked highly classified information from the NSA in 2013. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Snowden, alongside an ensemble cast including Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, and Nicolas Cage. Principal photography began in Munich in February 2015, and the film was screened at San Diego Comic-Con before premiering at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.
