Hartley also had a notable career in television, with appearances in popular shows such as 'Z-Cars' (1962–1974), 'The Avengers' (1963), and 'Grange Hill' (1979–1983). He showcased his versatility by playing a range of characters, from Bishop Fox in 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII' (1970) to a defendant in 'Crown Court' (1973).
