Robert Metcalfe
Robert Metcalfe, also known as Bob Metcalfe, is an American engineer and entrepreneur born on April 7, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York. He is renowned for his contributions to the development of the internet in the 1970s. Metcalfe co-invented Ethernet, a widely used networking technology, and co-founded 3Com, a computer networking company. He is also known for formulating Metcalfe's law, which describes the effect of a telecommunications network. Metcalfe has received numerous awards for his work, including the IEEE Medal of Honor and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. He was a professor of innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Texas at Austin from 2011 to 2021. In 2023, he was honored with the Turing Award, the highest distinction in computer science.
