Roy Jenkins

Roy Harris Jenkins, Baron Jenkins of Hillhead (11 November 1920 – 5 January 2003) was a British politician and statesman. He served as the President of the European Commission from 1977 to 1981. Jenkins had a diverse political career, being a member of the Labour Party, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Liberal Democrats at different times. He held important positions such as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary under the Wilson and Callaghan Governments. Jenkins was born into a political family, his father being a Labour MP. He studied at the University of Oxford and served as an intelligence officer during World War II. With a focus on building a civilised society, Jenkins implemented significant reforms during his tenure as Home Secretary.
