    Ryan Dean Shazier (born September 6, 1992) is an American former professional football player and linebacker. He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Shazier had a successful career in the NFL, earning a Pro Bowl appearance in 2016. However, during the 2017 season, he suffered a severe spinal injury while attempting a tackle, which left him paralyzed. After going through spinal stabilization surgery and intense rehabilitation, Shazier announced his retirement from football in 2020. His inspiring journey to learn to walk again has made him a symbol of perseverance and resilience in the sports world.
