Samm-Art Williams Biography
Samm-Art Williams (born Samuel Arthur Williams; January 20, 1946) is an American playwright, screenwriter, stage and film/TV actor, and television producer. His work primarily focuses on the African-American experience. Williams gained recognition for his play Home (1979), which earned him nominations for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. Additionally, he received two Emmy nominations for his contributions to TV series in the mid-1980s. In 2011, The Black Rep of St. Louis, Missouri produced the premiere of his play The Montford Point Marine. Born in Burgaw, North Carolina, Williams attended segregated public schools before starting his career in theater as an actor with the Negro Ensemble Company in New York City.
