Sarah Burke
Sarah Jean Burke (September 3, 1982 – January 19, 2012) was a Canadian freestyle skier known for her pioneering role in the superpipe event. She achieved remarkable success in her career, winning five gold medals at the Winter X Games and becoming the world champion in the halfpipe in 2005. Recognized for her skills and contributions to the sport, Burke successfully advocated for the inclusion of the superpipe event in the 2014 Winter Olympics. Tragically, she passed away following a training accident in Utah in 2012. Born in Barrie, Ontario, Burke grew up in Midland and attended Midland Secondary School. She is fondly remembered as a true trailblazer in the field of superpipe skiing.
