    Sarah Cortez is a Latina poet, teacher, editor, essayist, and law enforcement officer from Houston, Texas. She gained recognition for her poetry collection, How to Undress a Cop. Born and raised in Houston, Cortez graduated from St. Agnes Academy and studied Psychology and Religion at Rice University. She later earned a graduate degree in Classical Studies from the University of Texas in Austin. Cortez started her career as a high school teacher before pursuing a Master's degree in Accountancy from the University of Houston. Her involvement in civic organizations led to positions on various commissions and boards, sparking her interest in law enforcement. She joined the police academy at the University of Houston-Downtown's Criminal Justice Center.
