Scout Bassett (born Zhu Fuzhi; August 18, 1988) is an American Paralympic Track & Field Athlete. She spent her first seven years in a government-run orphanage in Nanjing, China after losing her right leg in a chemical fire as a newborn. At the age of six, she created a makeshift prosthetic leg using leather belts and masking tape. Bassett was adopted in 1995 by an American couple from Michigan. Growing up in Harbor Springs, Michigan, she faced challenges as the only Asian student in an all-white school. Despite this, Bassett immersed herself in books and sports. Today, she is known for her achievements as a Paralympic athlete.
