Sherman Edwards
Sherman Edwards (April 3, 1919 – March 30, 1981) was an American composer, jazz pianist, and songwriter, best known for his songs from the 1969 Broadway musical 1776 and the 1972 film adaptation. Born in East Harlem, New York City, Edwards was raised in the Weequahic section of Newark, New Jersey, and attended Weequahic High School. He studied history at New York University before embarking on a career as a jazz pianist, performing with renowned artists such as Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman. Edwards lived in Parsippany, New Jersey, from 1958 until his death in 1981.
