Stephen Butterworth
Stephen Butterworth (1885-1958) was a British physicist known for inventing the Butterworth filter, a type of electrical circuit that separates signals of different frequencies. Born on August 11, 1885, in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, Butterworth attended the Victoria University of Manchester, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and a teacher's certificate in 1907. He later obtained a Master of Science degree in physics in 1908. Butterworth worked as a physics lecturer at the Manchester Municipal College of Technology for 11 years before joining the National Physical Laboratory. There, he conducted research on electrical inductance standards. Stephen Butterworth's contributions to electrical engineering continue to be widely used in various applications today.
