    Stephen Powell is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League (AFL). Born on 7 September 1976, Powell began his AFL career with the Western Bulldogs in 1997 at the age of 20. Known for his toughness and aggression, he played a crucial role as the Bulldogs reached preliminary finals in 1997 and 1998. In 1999, he was traded to the Melbourne Football Club where he immediately made an impact, helping the team reach a Grand Final in 2000. Despite a loss, Powell stood out and polled strongly in the Best and Fairest awards. He missed the entire 2001 season due to a serious groin injury, but returned in 2002 and performed exceptionally well. At the end of that season, Powell decided to leave the club through the pre-season draft after protracted contract negotiations.
