Steven Hawley

Steven Alan Hawley (born December 12, 1951) is a former NASA astronaut and a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Kansas. He is known for his five Space Shuttle flights and his contributions to the field of astrophysics. Hawley was born in Ottawa, Kansas, and grew up in Salina, Kansas. He graduated from Salina High School Central in 1969 and went on to earn Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Kansas in 1973. He later attended graduate school at Lick Observatory, University of California, where he furthered his studies in the field of astrophysics. Hawley's brother, John F. Hawley, is a renowned theoretical astrophysicist.
