Steven Paul Marcus (December 13, 1928 – April 25, 2018) was an American academic and literary critic known for his influential psychoanalytic analyses of the novels of Charles Dickens and Victorian pornography. He held the position of George Delacorte Professor Emeritus in the Humanities at Columbia University. Born in New York City to Nathan and Adeline Marcus, Steven grew up in the Bronx during the Great Depression. Despite facing financial hardships, he pursued his education and went on to become a prominent figure in the field of literary criticism. Marcus's work continues to be acknowledged for its significant impact on understanding the works of Dickens and Victorian literature.
