Susan Graham is an American mezzo-soprano born on July 23, 1960, in Roswell, New Mexico. She was raised in Midland, Texas, and is a graduate of Texas Tech University and the Manhattan School of Music. Graham has studied under teachers Cynthia Hoffmann and Marlena Malas and has a background in piano, studying it for 13 years. She gained recognition as a winner in the Metropolitan Opera's National Council Auditions and received the Schwabacher Award from the Merola Program of San Francisco Opera. Graham made her international debut at Covent Garden in 1994 and has premiered roles in contemporary operas by composers such as John Harbison, Jake Heggie, and Tobias Picker. She is known for her expertise in French song repertoire and contemporary American composers' works.
