She gained recognition as the founder of the MeToo movement, which aims to support and empower women who have experienced sexual abuse. Burke started using the phrase in 2006 to provide a platform for women to share their stories. In 2017, the MeToo hashtag went viral after Alyssa Milano and others used it to address the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases. Time magazine acknowledged Burke as one of the 'silence breakers' and named her as Time Person of the Year in 2017. Currently, she serves as the Senior Director at Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn and frequently speaks at public events.
