    Thomas Chang Biography
Thomas Ming Swi Chang (born 8 April 1933) is a Chinese-born Canadian inventor, physician, and physiologist. During his time as an undergraduate student at McGill University, Chang invented the world's first artificial cell in 1957. He created a permeable plastic sack using improvised materials that effectively carried haemoglobin, similar to a natural blood cell. Chang completed his B.Sc. (1957), M.D., C.M. (1961), and Ph.D. (1965) degrees at McGill. He later became the founder and Director of the Artificial Cells and Organs Research Centre, as well as a Professor of Physiology, Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. Chang's notable contributions include discovering that enzymes carried by artificial cells could correct metabolic disorders and developing charcoal-filled cells for drug poisoning treatment. His work on finding a safe blood substitute brought him to prominence.
