Thomas Andrew 'Tom' Daschle (born December 9, 1947) is an American politician and lobbyist. He represented South Dakota in the United States Senate from 1987 to 2005. A member of the Democratic Party, Daschle led the Senate Democratic Caucus for the final ten years of his tenure, serving as Senate Minority Leader and Majority Leader. He served four terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1978 to 1986. Daschle was the highest-ranking elected official in South Dakota history when he became Majority Leader in 2001. After leaving politics, he took on roles as a policy advisor, senior fellow, and co-author advocating universal healthcare.
