Tommie Smith

Tommie C. Smith, born on June 6, 1944, is an American former track and field athlete and former wide receiver in the American Football League. He is best known for his remarkable performance at the 1968 Summer Olympics, where he won the 200-meter sprint finals and broke the 20-second barrier officially for the first time in history, clinching the gold medal with a time of 19.83 seconds. However, it was his iconic Black Power salute alongside John Carlos on the medal podium that caused controversy. The gesture was a powerful protest against racism and injustice faced by African Americans in the United States and remains a significant moment in the history of the Black Power movement. Throughout his career, Smith demonstrated immense athletic talent and contributed to the fight for equality.
