Tommy Douglas
Thomas Clement Douglas (1904-1986) was a Canadian politician and Baptist minister. He served as the seventh premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and the leader of the New Democratic Party from 1961 to 1971. Douglas is best known for introducing the continent's first single-payer, universal healthcare program while serving as premier of Saskatchewan. After his successful implementation of the healthcare program, he stepped down and became the first federal leader of the newly formed New Democratic Party in 1961. Although he never led the party to government, the NDP held significant influence during his tenure.
