Born Tristram Chockley Coffin, he came from a family with a background in the entertainment industry, with his mother being actress Elizabeth Christie and his uncle being writer Robert P. T. Coffin. Coffin's notable roles include playing Jeff King in Republic Pictures' 'King of the Rocket Men' (1949), the first of three serials featuring the 'Rocket Man' character. He also appeared in various other movie serials such as 'Dick Tracy's G-Men' (1939) and 'Sky Raiders' (1941).
