William David MacAskill, born on March 24, 1987, is a Scottish philosopher, author, and key figure in the effective altruism movement. He serves as an associate professor in Philosophy and Research Fellow at the Global Priorities Institute at the University of Oxford. MacAskill is also the director of the Forethought Foundation for Global Priorities Research. He co-founded Giving What We Can, the Centre for Effective Altruism, and 80,000 Hours. MacAskill is known for his books 'Doing Good Better' (2015) and 'What We Owe the Future' (2022), as well as his co-authorship of 'Moral Uncertainty' (2020). Born as William Crouch in Glasgow, he was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School before dedicating himself to philanthropy and ethical decision-making.
