Xavier Becerra (born January 26, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician. He is currently serving as the 25th United States Secretary of Health and Human Services since March 2021. Prior to this role, he served as the Attorney General of California from January 2017 until March 2021. Becerra represented Downtown Los Angeles in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 2017 and was Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus from 2013 to 2017. Born in Sacramento, California, he graduated from Stanford University and Stanford Law School. Becerra began his career as a lawyer and worked at the Legal Assistance Corporation of central Massachusetts before returning to California. He held various positions in the California State Assembly and the California Department of Justice.
