Silent Friend follows a ginkgo tree across three interlinked vignettes set in Marburg, Germany: 1908, when the university admits its first female botany student; 1972, portraying a reserved student entwined with a housemate and her geranium studies; and 2020, where a Hong Kong neuroscientist enlists a botanist for an experiment.
