The President's Cake follows nine-year-old Lamia in 1990s Iraq under Saddam Hussein, when international sanctions cause severe shortages. Living with her grandmother Bibi and a cockerel in the Mesopotamian Marshes, Lamia is selected by her school to bake a mandated birthday cake and must improvise to obtain scarce ingredients daily.
