Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was an American singer and actress. She gained recognition at the age of 10 for her appearances on Star Search and performances with Gladys Knight. At 12, she signed with Jive Records and her uncle's Blackground Records. Aaliyah's debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, produced by R. Kelly, sold three million copies in the US and was certified double platinum. She then signed with Atlantic Records. Aaliyah's career spanned R&B, pop, and hip hop, and she helped redefine these genres. She tragically passed away at the age of 22 in a plane crash.
