Aaron Vincent McGruder (born May 29, 1974) is an American writer, cartoonist, and producer best known for creating The Boondocks, a Universal Press Syndicate comic strip and its animated TV series adaptation. Born in Chicago, Illinois, McGruder moved to Columbia, Maryland at the age of six. He attended Loyola Blakefield and later transferred to Oakland Mills High School and the University of Maryland, where he graduated with a degree in African American Studies. The Boondocks started as a webcomic on Hitlist.com and later became a popular comic strip in the University of Maryland's newspaper, The Diamondback.
