Alex Honnold (born August 17, 1985) is an American rock climber renowned for his free solo ascents of big walls. In June 2017, he gained global recognition by becoming the first person to free solo a route on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, completing the 2,900-foot route Freerider at 5.13a. This extraordinary feat was hailed as one of the greatest athletic achievements in history. Honnold also holds the fastest ascent record for the 'Yosemite Triple Crown,' completing Mount Watkins, The Nose, and the Regular Northwest Face of Half Dome in just 18 hours and 50 minutes. Furthermore, he received the prestigious Piolet d'Or in 2015 alongside Tommy Caldwell for their completion of the Moonwalk Traverse in Patagonia. Honnold is the co-author of the memoir Alone on the Wall (2015) and the subject of the award-winning 2018 documentary Free Solo.
