Alex Padilla is an American politician and senior United States senator from California. Born on March 22, 1973, Padilla has been serving in the Senate since 2021. Prior to this, he held various political positions including the 30th secretary of state of California from 2015 to 2021, and a member of the California State Senate and the Los Angeles City Council. Padilla was appointed to the Senate by Governor Gavin Newsom after Kamala Harris became Vice President. He won a special election and a full Senate term in November 2022. Padilla became California's senior senator on September 29, 2023, following the passing of Dianne Feinstein.
