    Alex Newcombe Walkinshaw (born 5 October 1974) is a British actor known for his long-running roles in popular TV series. He portrayed Dale 'Smithy' Smith in the ITV police procedural series The Bill, and Adrian 'Fletch' Fletcher in BBC medical dramas Casualty and Holby City. Walkinshaw also appeared as PE teacher Jez Diamond in the BBC school-based drama series Waterloo Road. His acting career began early, with his first television appearance at the age of 12 as an extra in Grange Hill. He joined The Bill as PC Dale Smith, later returning as Sergeant, and left in 2001. Walkinshaw's talent was noticed when he was acting at the Royal Court Theatre, leading to his role in The Bill.
