Alice Ghostley (August 14, 1923 – September 21, 2007) was an American actress and singer known for her stage, film, and television performances. She gained popularity for her roles as Esmeralda on Bewitched (1969–72), Cousin Alice on Mayberry R.F.D. (1970–71), and Bernice Clifton on Designing Women (1986–93), which earned her an Emmy nomination in 1992. Ghostley was also a regular on Nichols (1971–72) and The Julie Andrews Hour (1972–73). Born in Eve, Missouri, she was the daughter of Edna Muriel and Harry Francis Ghostley. She attended the University of Oklahoma before pursuing a career in theater.
