Alice Waters (born April 28, 1944) is an American chef, restaurateur, and author. She is best known for opening Chez Panisse, a renowned restaurant in Berkeley, California, in 1971. Waters played a significant role in creating the farm-to-table movement and pioneering California cuisine. She has written several books, including Chez Panisse Cooking, The Art of Simple Food I and II, and 40 Years of Chez Panisse. In addition to her culinary accomplishments, Waters established the Chez Panisse Foundation in 1996 and the Edible Schoolyard program at the Martin Luther King Middle School in Berkeley. She is a vocal advocate for universal access to healthy, organic foods and her work has influenced initiatives such as Michelle Obama's White House organic vegetable garden program.
