Amat Escalante is a Mexican film director, producer, and screenwriter. Born on 28 February 1979 in Barcelona, Spain, Escalante is best known for directing the Mexican crime thriller 'Heli,' which won him the Best Director prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. He also directed the 2016 Mexican drama 'The Untamed,' for which he received the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2016 Venice Film Festival. Escalante spent his early years in Guanajuato, Mexico, before moving to Spain in 2001 to study film editing and sound. He later joined the International School of Film and Television in Havana, Cuba. Escalante has made a name for himself in the film industry with his unique storytelling and compelling direction.
