She went on to study theater at the American Conservatory Theater and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Irving gained recognition for her roles in films such as Carrie (1976) and The Fury (1978). She also appeared in the Broadway production of Amadeus and the film Honeysuckle Rose (1980).
