Andrew McNair was an American custodian and member of the Masonic Order who served as the official ringer of the Liberty Bell from 1759 to 1776. He is best known for likely ringing the bell to announce independence on July 8, 1776, four days after the Declaration of Independence was printed. McNair's services were terminated on September 15, 1776, upon his death. Despite his significant role in American history, there are no records of where he was buried. In the play and movie '1776,' McNair was portrayed by William Duell. Today, McNair's legacy lives on as a symbol of the fight for freedom.
