Anne Bancroft (born Anna Maria Louisa Italiano; September 17, 1931 – June 6, 2005) was an American actress known for her versatility and acclaimed performances. She achieved numerous accolades throughout her career, including an Academy Award, three BAFTA Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Tony Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Cannes Film Festival Award. Trained in the method acting technique by Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, Bancroft made her film debut in 1952's Don't Bother to Knock. Over the next five years, she appeared in 14 other films. Bancroft gained recognition on Broadway with her Tony-winning performances in Two for the Seesaw (1958) and The Miracle Worker (1959). Her film career continued to flourish alongside her stage work.
