She began her acting career on the soap opera Another World, playing Vicky Hudson and Marley Love. In 1991, she received a Daytime Emmy Award for her performance. Heche made her film debut in the 1992 drama O Pioneers! and gained recognition in the 1990s for her roles in Walking and Talking and Donnie Brasco. She continued to take on high-profile projects, including Volcano, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Wag the Dog.
