Joseph Anthony Lewis (March 27, 1927 – March 25, 2013) was an American public intellectual and journalist. He was a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and a columnist for The New York Times. Lewis is credited with creating the field of legal journalism in the United States. Early in his career, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter praised Lewis' exceptional understanding of legal cases. Born in New York City to Jewish parents, Lewis attended the Horace Mann School in the Bronx. Throughout his career, he became one of the influential liberal voices during a pivotal period in American history.
