Anthony Swofford (born August 12, 1970) is an American writer and former U.S. Marine. He is best known for his 2003 book Jarhead, which is based on his personal experiences during the Persian Gulf War. Swofford's memoir served as the inspiration for the 2005 film of the same name, directed by Sam Mendes. Born into a military family in Fairfield, California, Swofford grew up on military bases and was influenced by his father's service in the Vietnam War. He enlisted in the Marine Corps to fulfill his desire for adventure and to prove himself. Swofford describes himself as a reader and a loner during his childhood and military service.
