Barney Martin Biography
Barney Martin (March 3, 1923 – March 21, 2005) was an American actor, best known for his role as Morty Seinfeld, Jerry's father, on the sitcom Seinfeld (1991-1998). He also appeared in supporting roles in films such as The Producers (1967) and Arthur (1981). Martin originated the role of Amos Hart (Mr. Cellophane) in the 1976 Broadway production of Chicago. Prior to his acting career, Martin served as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and worked as an NYPD officer for twenty years, eventually becoming a detective. He began his comedy career while still serving as a police officer. Despite being of Irish Catholic descent, Martin's portrayal of Morty Seinfeld resonated with many Jewish fans of the show who saw similarities with their own fathers.
