John Barry Humphries (17 February 1934 – 22 April 2023) was an Australian comedian, actor, author, and satirist. He gained international fame for his stage and television characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. Humphries appeared in numerous stage productions, films, and television shows throughout his career. His most well-known character, Dame Edna Everage, began as a satire of Australian suburban life but evolved into a parody of fame, known for her flamboyant appearance and sharp wit. Another popular character created by Humphries was the comically inappropriate cultural attaché Sir Les Patterson. Humphries was a versatile performer who made significant contributions to Australian comedy and entertainment.
