He is best known for his role as Lieutenant Detective Steve Sloan, the son of Dr. Mark Sloan (played by Dick Van Dyke), on the TV show Diagnosis: Murder. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Van Dyke made his television debut on The Dick Van Dyke Show alongside his brother Christian. However, his father encouraged him to wait before pursuing a show business career, prioritizing his childhood. Van Dyke's relatives in Diagnosis: Murder were frequently played by his real-life family members.
