He has received critical acclaim for his performances and has been honored with several awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Silver Bear. Del Toro gained recognition for his roles as police officer Javier Rodriguez in Traffic (2000) and ex-con Jack Jordan in 21 Grams (2003), for which he received an Academy Award nomination.
