Bernard Elliott 'Bernie' Barrow (December 30, 1927 – August 4, 1993) was an American actor and collegiate drama professor. He is best known for his role as Johnny Ryan, the patriarch of an Irish-American family, on the television soap opera Ryan's Hope from 1975 to 1989. Barrow was born in New York City and received his bachelor's degree from Syracuse University in 1947, his master's degree from Columbia in 1948, and his doctorate from Yale Drama School in 1957. He taught theater at Brooklyn College for three decades and also directed summer stock and community theater. Prior to Ryan's Hope, he appeared on The Doctors, Where the Heart Is, The Secret Storm, and The Edge of Night. In 1990, he was cast as Louie Slavinski in another television series.
