Bernie Sanders

Bernard Sanders, born September 8, 1941, is an American politician and activist. He has been serving as the senior United States senator from Vermont since 2007, making him the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history. Prior to his current position, Sanders was the U.S. representative for Vermont's at-large congressional district from 1991 to 2007. Known for his close relationship with the Democratic Party, Sanders has caucused with House and Senate Democrats throughout his career and has emerged as a key ally of President Joe Biden. A self-described democratic socialist, Sanders is often regarded as a leader of the progressive movement in the United States. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Party nomination for president in both 2016 and 2020, finishing in second place in both campaigns. Prior to his political career, Sanders served as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
