Bill Buford (born 1954) is an American author and journalist. Known for his books Among the Thugs and Heat, Buford has made a name for himself in the literary world. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and raised in Southern California, he attended the University of California, Berkeley before studying at King's College, Cambridge. Buford spent most of the 1980s in England and was the editor of Granta for sixteen years. He is currently the fiction editor for The New Yorker. Buford is credited with coining the term 'dirty realism' and Among the Thugs offers an insider's account of English football hooliganism.
