Bill Macy, born Wolf Martin Garber on May 18, 1922, was an American television, film and stage actor. He is best known for his role in the CBS television series Maude (1972–1978). Macy was born in Revere, Massachusetts and raised Jewish in Brooklyn, New York. Before his acting career took off, he served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. Macy initially worked as a cab driver before making his Broadway debut as Walter Matthau's understudy in Once More, with Feeling in 1958. He also appeared as a cab driver on the soap opera The Edge of Night in 1966. Macy was an original cast member of the Off-Broadway show Oh! Calcutta! from 1969 to 1971.
