Bill Richardson (November 15, 1947 – September 1, 2023) was an American politician, author, and diplomat. He served as the 30th governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011, as well as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary in the Clinton administration. Richardson was also a U.S. congressman, chair of the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and chair of the Democratic Governors Association. While nominated for the position of Secretary of Commerce in the Obama administration in 2008, he withdrew due to an investigation into possible improper business dealings. Richardson played a role in advising on diplomatic issues related to North Korea and made multiple visits to the nation in efforts to release American citizens.
